AI Policy

Hybrix emphasizes human understanding and creation. Although artificial intelligence (AI) is a centerpiece of modern software engineering, we challenge you to see what you can build all by yourself. When people share their creations, we encourage honest disclosure about AI usage. This page defines some terminology to make that easier. Of course, for digital content found on a website, there's generally no easy way to prove how it was made; attestations are an honor system.

AI approaches

For the purpose of AI usage statements and ROM Gallery tagging, Hybrix defines three AI approaches. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) means modern neural network generative algorithms such as large language models (LLM); it does not include classic machine assistance such as spell checkers, grammar checkers, or compiler-type tooling. Where a work has separable parts (art assets, source files, etc.), if the parts are not individually labeled, then the label with most AI involvement applies. A clearly identified quotation or excerpt (for example, showing a screenshot or output of an AI app in order to discuss it) is not considered usage of AI.

"AI-free"

For this approach, AI is not used at all, not even for research or proofreading.

"Hand-made"

The work is entirely authored by humans. An AI agent may be used for research, planning, proofreading, or detecting mistakes, but no AI output is incorporated into the work itself. For example, humans write every word in a source file, and humans draw every pixel in an image. Proofreading takes the form of "Can you find any mistakes in this paragraph?", not "Rewrite my paragraph to make it sound better."

"Made using AI"

AI is not merely used for research or review; the AI agent participates directly in "making." For example, AI generates full sentences that go into a documentation page, AI generates parts of an image, or AI creates an initial draft which the human refines.

The term "made using AI" not attempt to measure the amount of human or AI contribution. Those details tend to be nuanced, and best described by creators themselves in an accompanying note.
